The application of RFID technology in the livestock industry mainly has two aspects: one is to establish a livestock management system for fine animal breeding, and the other is to establish an animal tracking and management system. The safety of beef products has become a key factor in the beef supply chain. In view of this, more than 20 countries and regions around the world have adopted RFID technology to track and trace the production process of food, and have achieved good results. The RFID based beef tracking system identifies and connects the management objects of supply chain links such as cattle growth, beef processing, storage, and retail, and then represents these identifications using barcodes and manually readable methods. Once there are hygiene and safety issues with beef products, these labels can be used for traceability, accurately narrowing down the scope of safety issues, identifying the links where the problems occurred, and tracing the geographical location of the relevant production area, slaughter or processing institutions, and even individual cattle. This can block the flow of goods from these places into the market and then carry out effective governance.

The first step in RFID based cattle breeding and tracking is to install electronic ID cards on the cattle, creating a permanent digital file for each cow that uniquely identifies its attributes. The basic methods for installing electronic tags on animals include collar style, ear tag style, injectable style, and pill style electronic tags.
