The OIL -2 type water oil concentration meter uses the characteristic absorption of petroleum substances in the near-infrared region as the basis for determining the oil content in water samples. The oil extractant has no absorption peak near a specific infrared band. Therefore, when a beam of infrared light passes through the extractant that extracts oil from a water sample, the infrared energy is absorbed and attenuated. The attenuation amount depends on the amount of oil in the water sample, and the oil concentration in the water sample is determined by the Lambert Beer law.
