This instrument is designed as a whole and has four sample fixtures, which can test four samples simultaneously. By driving the connecting plate with a motor, the friction device installed with weights is driven to perform reciprocating friction motion on the sample, causing the sample to produce pilling or wear. The wear resistance performance of the sample under a certain pressure is tested, and the grade of the sample is evaluated, providing reference data for material selection.

Abrasion test

1、 Scope

Suitable for judging fabric pilling and other related surface changes.

This method is applicable to various knitted and woven fabrics.

Not suitable for fabrics with a thickness exceeding 3mm.

Also applicable to samples that have been washed or dry cleaned.


2、 Principle

Install the sample on the Martindale friction tester and run it at a fixed speed.

Under a standard light source, grade the worn sample using a standard drawing card.


3、 Equipment and standard materials

1. Martindale friction tester.

2. Standard felt: weight 750 ± 50g/m2The thickness is 3 ± 0.3mm.

3. Combed plain weave fabric made of standard friction fabric wool with a weight of 195g/m2.

4. Standard foam lining: density 29-31kg/m3The thickness is 3 ± 0.01mm.

5. Fabric sample cutter: with a diameter of 38mm.


Preparation of Four Samples

1. Unless otherwise specified, the sample must be washed or dry cleaned before taking the sample according to the final use of the fabric.

2. The sampling location must be at a distance from the edge of the fabric that exceeds 1/10 of the width of the entire fabric.

3. Do not take samples from areas with wrinkles or other fabric defects that may affect the test results.

4. Use a sampler to cut a set of circular samples from the fabric.

5. The samples do not contain the same weft yarn.


5、 Environmental conditions

The sample is humidified under the specified constant temperature and humidity conditions.


6、 Operation steps

1. Install the standard felt with a diameter of 165mm and the sample with a diameter of 165mm on the grinding table in sequence.

2. Install the sample with the front facing down and the standard foam on the sample holder.

3. Place the sample holder on the grinding table and insert the central axis into the sample holder.

Ball test

1、 Scope

4、 Sample preparation

Unless otherwise specified, the sample must be washed or dry cleaned before taking the sample according to the final use of the fabric.

The sampling location must be at a distance from the edge of the fabric that exceeds 1/10 of the width of the entire fabric.

Do not take samples from areas with wrinkles or other fabric defects that may affect the test results.

Cut a set of circular samples from the fabric using a sampler.

There are no identical weft yarns among the 5 samples.


5、 The sample is humidified under the specified constant temperature and humidity conditions.


6、 Operation steps

Install standard felt with a diameter of 165mm and standard friction cloth with a diameter of 165mm on the grinding table in sequence.

2. Install the sample facing downwards onto the sample clamp.

Place the sample holder on the grinding table and insert the central axis into the sample holder.

4. Set the number of tests:

After setting 5 times, press the start buttonSTARTPress the key to enter the testing state, and after the test is completed, remove the sample and proceed with the rating.


7、 Rating

1. Stick the sample onto the cardboard with double-sided adhesive.

2. In the rating box, if viewed from a 45 degree angle, it can be rated at half a level.

3. Usually, at least 2 people are required to rate separately, with the observer's eyes 300-500mm away from the sample.

4. Place the sample on the left and the original sample on the right.

5. The rating chart is divided into 5 levels.

Note:5- No pilling

4- Slight pilling

3- Moderate pilling

2- Severe pilling

1- Severe pilling

 Average rating result.


8、 Report

1. Indicate the test standard number.

2. Clearly state the grade of each sample and their average value.

3. Indicate the washing conditions before taking the sample.

4. Indicate the number of operations.

Maintenance and upkeep

1. Keep the instrument clean at all times, wipe the cylindrical shaft with a cotton cloth before and after each experiment to keep it clean.

If not used for a long time, please remove the test pressure plate and spray anti rust oil.

3. Add lubricating oil to the gear parts every month.

4. The turntable in the middle of the instrument is made of plastic, and the screw threads that fix the holes on it are prone to damage. Therefore, when changing between wear resistance testing and pilling testing, attention should be paid to protecting the screw threads of the turntable.

5. When using this instrument for testing, the curve drawn by the friction head is the standard Lissajous curve. The twisting of the guide plate, friction head guide shaft, and friction head itself will cause the friction head movement trajectory to no longer be the standard curve, which will have a negative impact on the test. Therefore, attention should be paid to protecting the integrity of all accessories.
