1. Advantages and disadvantages of direct startup
Advantages: requiring fewer components, simple starting method, low cost, suitable for low-power electric motors. The current required for direct starting of an electric motor is more than 5 times that of normal operation. In theory, any circuit or transformer that provides power to the motor and has a capacity greater than 5-7 times the capacity of the motor can be started directly. This request is about small capacity motors that are easy to complete, so the vast majority of small capacity motors are directly started without the need for voltage reduction starting.
Defects: For large capacity electric motors, on the one hand, the capacity of the power supply lines and transformers is difficult to meet the conditions for direct starting of the motor. On the other hand, the strong starting current impacts the power grid and the motor, affecting the service life of the motor and being detrimental to the power grid.
2. Advantages and disadvantages of soft start startup
Advantages: It has little impact on the voltage fluctuation of the power grid, has a small impact on the power grid, maintains the motor well, extends the service life of the motor, and is more suitable for high-power and heavy-duty motors.
(1) When the motor is started directly at full voltage, the starting current will reach 4-7 times the rated current. When the capacity of the motor is relatively large, this starting current will cause a sharp drop in the grid voltage, affecting the normal operation of other equipment in the same grid. During soft start, the starting current is usually 2-3 times the rated current, and the voltage fluctuation rate of the power grid is generally within 10%, with very little impact on other equipment.
