When the raw water containing hardness ions passes through the resin layer of the exchanger, the calcium and magnesium ions in the water are replaced with the sodium ions in the resin, and the resin adsorbs the calcium and magnesium ions while the sodium ions enter the water. In this way, the water flowing out of the exchanger is softened water with hardness ions removed. As the exchange process continues, all Na+in the resin is replaced to saturation and loses its exchange function. At this point, an industrial NaCl (carbon free) solution must be used to regenerate the resin, replacing the Ca2+and Mg2+adsorbed by the resin. The resin then re adsorbs sodium ions and restores its softening exchange capacity.

Work procedure:
1. Water supply: Untreated water passes through the resin layer, undergoes an exchange reaction, and produces soft water.
2. Backwash: Water enters from the lower part of the resin layer, loosens the resin, and removes fine impurities.
3. Salt water regeneration: Using high concentration salt water (NaCl) to flow through the resin, the failed resin is restored to sodium type usable resin.
4. Rinse: According to the process of water supply, rinse excess salt solution and regenerated calcium and magnesium ions through resin.
5. Water injection: Inject water into the salt tank to dissolve the salt for the next regeneration.
