China's production and consumption of household appliances, as well as the amount of scrap, are far ahead of any other country in the world. According to relevant statistical data, household appliances in China began to enter households in large quantities in the 1980s. Since 2004, the production of televisions, washing machines, refrigerators, air conditioners, and computers in China has reached 240 million units, with an estimated social ownership of over 1 billion units. According to the normal service life of household appliances, which is 10-15 years, most of them have already entered the scrap period. Since 2003, China has entered a peak period of household appliance scrapping, with an average annual scrap volume of 4-5 million units for refrigerators, washing machines, and televisions. However, plastic accounts for up to 95% of such products, most of which are made up of pure plastic components, with a wider variety of types and larger quantities.
China has entered industrialization, and as one of the symbols of industrialization and modernization, the domestic sales of automobiles in China have consistently ranked first in the world. As a result, the number of scrapped cars is increasing day by day. According to statistics, the average plastic components contained in the dismantling of each car (including car batteries, bumpers, instrument panels, wheel covers, door panels, engine covers, intake systems, car lamp housings, and their accessories and spare parts) are becoming more and more common in cars nowadays. With the continuous innovation of materials, the concept of lightweighting in automobiles has become increasingly prevalent in the current trend of energy conservation and emission reduction. More plastics are gradually replacing metal parts and becoming popular in most household cars. Developed countries consider the amount of plastic used in cars as an important indicator of the level of car design and manufacturing. The amount of plastic used in each car has increased from 100-130kg in the 1990s to 152kg in 2004 and 174kg in 2006. Currently, the amount used is 230kg, and Germany has the highest amount of plastic used in cars, accounting for more than 15% of the total vehicle materials. Experts predict that by 2020, the average amount of plastic used in cars may reach over 500kg per vehicle, accounting for more than one-third of the total material used in vehicles. In the future, the technological content of plastics will also be higher, and their applications will naturally be more extensive.
With the official introduction of the "Regulations on the Management of Recycling and Disposal of Waste Electrical and Electronic Products" in China and the continuous enhancement of public environmental awareness, a scientific and large-scale system for the recycling and utilization of waste household appliances has been gradually established.
