PE-5780 balanced scraper adhesion and scratch hardness tester
1、 Hardness Introduction:
1. Hardness
There have been some misunderstandings about the definition of hardness in the paint industry in the past. Most coatings have viscoelasticity, so they may sink to some extent. Therefore, DIN 55 945 defines hardness as the ability of a coating to resist mechanical forces such as pressure, friction, and scratching.
In practical application, three different experimental methods are used:
(1) Swing rod hardness
-According to the comb described by K ö nig and Persoz
(2) Indentation hardness
-Brinell tenderness hardness tester
(3) Scratch hardness
-DUR-O-Test hardness tester
-Pencil hardness tester
To obtain clear test results, technicians need to record the type of experimental method, such as "indentation hardness according to ISO 2815 standard" or "swing time according to ISO 1522 standard".
BYK Gardner provides instruments required for conducting different hardness tests.
2. Swing rod hardness
This method evaluates hardness by measuring the decay time of the pendulum swing. The swing rod is supported by two stainless steel balls on the surface of the coating. There is a physical relationship between the oscillation time, amplitude, and geometric dimensions of the pendulum. The elasticity of the coating determines its hardness.
When the pendulum is in motion, the ball rolls back and forth on the surface and exerts pressure on the coating surface. According to the elasticity of the coating, the oscillation will be stronger or weaker. If there is no elasticity, the pendulum will vibrate strongly. A highly elastic surface can lead to accelerated attenuation.
3. Scratch hardness
This is an ideal method for rapid evaluation of painted products. The measurement results cannot be correlated with any other hardness measurement method.
Scratch testing can be performed using a metal needle (DUR-O-Test) or pencil. Pencils of different hardness levels are drawn across the coating surface to determine which pencil caused the indentation. This method is only suitable for smoother surfaces.
4. Brinell indentation hardness tester
This method is suitable for measuring the plastic deformation behavior of coatings. This method should not be used to evaluate coatings with elastic deformation behavior, as elastic coatings will show little or no indentation when the instrument is removed.
The instrument has a double cone module, place it on the coating for 30 seconds.
2、 Balance scraper adhesion and scratch hardness tester:
Used for conducting scratch adhesion and hardness (scratch hardness) tests on surfaces of coatings and various materials.
■ Used to determine the level of adhesion of coatings to substrates
■ Relatively classify the series of coating samples
The instrument has a rod with a pivot point, and a 45 degree arm bracket on the rod. The support for weighing and device testing is located at one end of the rod, and the other end of the rod is a counterweight. Rotate a cam to lift the arm on the rod, and the sample holder is mounted on a pulley to move the test sample towards the fixed arm.
3、 Scraper adhesion test:
The rod used for the scraper adhesion test is a 1.6mm (0.0625in) diameter drill rod, with a 180 degree bent ring at the front end and an outer diameter of 6.5mm (0.256in). This part has been hardened, polished, and chrome plated. A set of 12 weights with long slots and storage racks are supplied together with the experiment. When conducting adhesion tests, the weight is usually increased by every 500 grams up to a maximum of 10kg.
4、 Scratch hardness test:
Move the test sample towards the direction of the needle, and apply different loads in grams on the needle. The minimum load can slide the film to the substrate, which is used to determine the scratch resistance strength of the coating. When conducting the hardness (scratch resistance) test, increase the weight from 10 grams to a maximum of 12kg.
