Reducing structural weight to save energy during operation is a long-term goal pursued by people in the automotive industry, aviation, aerospace and other fields, and is also one of the trends in manufacturing technology development. Hydraulic forming is a manufacturing technology aimed at achieving structural lightweighting.

Hydraulic forming, also known as "internal high-pressure forming", is based on the principle of using a pipe as a blank, applying ultra-high pressure liquid inside the pipe, and applying axial thrust to both ends of the pipe blank for material replenishment. Under the combined action of two external forces, the tube blank material undergoes plastic deformation and adheres to the inner wall of the mold cavity, resulting in a hollow part that meets the technical requirements in both shape and accuracy.

For hollow variable cross-section structural components, the traditional manufacturing process is to first press and form two halves, and then weld them into a whole, while hydraulic forming can form hollow structural components with varying cross-sections along the component in one go. Compared with stamping and welding processes, hydraulic forming technology and processes have the following main advantages:

1. Reduce quality and save materials. For typical parts such as car engine mounts and radiator brackets, hydraulic formed parts are lighter than stamped parts; For hollow stepped shaft components, some weight can be reduced.

2. Reduce the number of parts and molds, and lower mold costs. Hydraulic forming parts usually only require one set of molds, while stamping parts mostly require multiple sets of molds. The number of hydraulic formed engine bracket parts has been reduced from 6 to 1, and the number of radiator bracket parts has been reduced from 17 to 10.

3. It can reduce the amount of welding required for subsequent mechanical processing and assembly. Taking the radiator bracket as an example, with an increase in heat dissipation area, the number of solder joints has been reduced from 174 to 20, and the number of processes has been reduced from 13 to 6, resulting in improved productivity.

4. Improve strength and stiffness, especially fatigue strength, such as hydraulic formed radiator brackets, whose stiffness can be increased in both vertical and horizontal directions.

5. Reduce production costs. According to statistical analysis of hydraulic formed parts, the production cost of hydraulic formed parts is lower than that of stamped parts on average, and mold costs will also be reduced.

Instructions for using a 500 ton hydraulic press:

Before operating the hydraulic press, all kinds of debris on the mold should be cleaned first, and any dirt on the hydraulic press rod should be wiped clean. Hydraulic press operators must undergo training to master equipment performance and operating techniques before they can operate independently. Assemble the upper and lower molds for centering, adjust the mold clearance, and do not allow unilateral deviation from the center. After confirmation, press the mold again.

Adjust the working pressure of the hydraulic press, but it should not exceed the rated pressure of the equipment. Test the pressure of one workpiece and produce it after passing the inspection. Start the equipment for pressure testing, check if the pressure reaches the working pressure, if the equipment operates normally and reliably, and if there are any leaks.

Before starting the hydraulic press, start the equipment and let it idle for 5 minutes. At the same time, check whether the oil level in the oil tank is sufficient, whether the oil pump sound is normal, and whether there are any leaks in the hydraulic unit, pipelines, joints, and pistons. For different hydraulic press profiles and workpieces, during press fitting and calibration, the working pressure, pressure application, holding frequency and time of the press should be adjusted at any time, and it should be ensured that the mold and workpiece are not damaged.

When the hydraulic press body pressure plate slides up and down, it is strictly prohibited to insert hands and heads into the working parts of the pressure plate and mold. It is strictly prohibited to strike, stretch, weld, cut, bend, twist or perform other operations on the work while applying pressure. Smoking, welding, cutting, and hot work are not allowed around the hydraulic press, and flammable and explosive materials are not allowed to be stored. Take fire prevention measures.
